Hello everyone! It's been a while since I've actually written anything of substance on my blog here...but I'm sure you've been enjoying the videos and such. Not to worry, there will be more video blogs to come of me (raise a mighty huzzah).
I'm just back from Green Lake, WI where I had an amazing encounter with composer Michael Helman.

From his picture I was excpecting him to be quite dull and a bit on the conservitive side...boy was I wrong! He was funnier than shit (at times quite flaming), and really an impressive conductor. Many times composers do NOT lead groups well and have not a clue as to how to produce a musical product. Michael is not of that camp. He was a very fine conductor and it was the first year that I actually felt like we accomplished some musicality. Besides him being a great conductor, he was cool with letting us know that he was gay (yeah, I know big surprise an organist/composer who is gay). He came up to our house many nights during the week, just to chat and have a little drink. Such a genuine person who really makes you feel good to be around.
I felt bad becuase some of the other clinicians did not include him or even talk to him. Keep in mind that the Orchestra director was from Northwestern College here in MN...no big suprise that he didn't want to associate with us. All in all it was a very good week and I'm glad to have gotten to know Michael Helman.
