Teaching in quicksand

I'm not sure how many people who read my blog have ever taught a classroom full of kids (or adults for that matter) but thoes who have I'm sure can sympathize with my day.

Today was one of those days that just kept getting more and more frustrating for me. Usually when a lesson is not being grasped by the students, I am able to modify on the fly and just keep going. I say usually because today was a day of teaching in quicksand. No matter what direction I went, the kids were lost. No matter how hard I tried to make them understand the simplest of directions no one was listening. It's a terrible feeling to know that you need to change activities, but can't because no matter where you go, the students will not be able to handle it: Games are out, instruments are out, so that leaves me with singing songs or clapping rhythm patterns...just kidding. I managed to get through the day. But it left me with a HUGE headache and that sinking feeling that my teaching is stuck in a rut and needs to get a kickstart and that I need to go back and re-vamp my curriculum for the year. ug. Some days this job drives me to drink...Rumplemintz here I come.
